Professor Lyn van Swol
I received my Ph.D. in social psychology from University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and until recently I taught in
the Department of Communication at Northwestern. My research interests
include the exchange of information in groups, minority influence
in a group discussion, how nonverbal mimicry affects social influence,
and factors affecting the acceptance of advice.
My current projects include: how extreme members differ in the amount
of information they discuss in groups; how type of information people
in the minority opinion discuss affects their persuasiveness in
the group, processes involved in group memory of information during
a group discussion, how designating people as advisors in a group
discussion leads to more acceptance of their unique information,
and detection of deception from people offering advice.
