Professor C. David Mortensen
I teach graduate and undergraduate courses in (a)
communication and conflict, (b) communication theory, and (c) miscommunication
and problematic talk.
I write long scientific monographs that deal with communicative
difficulty, problematic interaction, and conflict. In 1994, I wrote
the first scholarly book on the subject of Problematic Communication.
In 1997 I wrote the first scholarly book on the subject of Miscommunication.
I have spent the last five years writing a third scholarly book
on the subject of The Reality of Everyday Life: Misunderstanding
Other People. In 1999 I wrote a major essay dealing with problems
with Linguistic Constructions in Violence, Peace, & Conflict.
In addition to the work in progress or already published, I wrote
Communication: The Study of Human Interaction in 1972.
I also edited several volumes, Basic Readings in Communication
Theory, Advances in Communication Theory and Foundations
of Communication Theory (with Kenneth Sereno). I also designed
the Addison-Wesley series in communication research (four volumes).
I just finished a revision of a classic text, Communication
Theory, which Transaction Press requested to publish in their
new division—classic contributions to social science. It is
due out in December. I have also written The Good Life: Pathways
to Personal Fulfillment for Lexington Books. I am also finishing
a second project, Optimal Human Relations, for Transaction
Press.
